Only Twenty Centimeters Deep, Which Is What Makes It Work on a Low Ceiling

Most island fittings are a problem of headroom. A drum or a cluster eats 40 or 50 cm before the chain is even counted, and in a kitchen with an eight foot ceiling that puts the bottom edge somewhere between you and the person across the counter. This one is 20 cm from the top of the rope to the rim of the cones. Hang it so the cones finish 30 to 36 inches above the worktop and there is still clear sight line across the island, which is the whole reason people put seating there. It is also why the fitting suits a galley kitchen, where anything deeper would be in the way of the wall cabinets.

Does the rope hold its shape?

Yes. The wave is formed over a shaped iron core, so the rope keeps its curve out of the box and does not sag over time. What you adjust on site is the chain length, not the shape of the run.

How low does it hang?

The body itself is only 20 cm deep, and the chain adds about 50 cm. Over a counter, set the bottom of the cones 30 to 36 inches above the worktop. The shallow body helps in a kitchen with an eight foot ceiling.

Which lamps should I use?

E26 or E27, one per cone, not included. The cones point straight down, so the lamp is barely seen from a standing position. A frosted warm white lamp around 2700K keeps glare off a polished worktop.

Will it light a whole kitchen?

It is not meant to. A run of cones throws task light down onto a counter or a table. Keep a ceiling fitting or downlights for the rest of the room and use this over the working surface.

Is there wood in it?

It is hemp rope over iron, with no timber in it. The warm tone you see in the photographs is the natural rope, which keeps its color and softens a little with time.

How do I clean the cones?

Let the lamps cool. Wipe the outside of each cone with a barely damp cloth and dry it at once, since the finish is painted metal. Brush the rope dry and keep water off it.

An open cone is a directional shade. Almost nothing escapes sideways or upward, which is exactly what a work surface wants and exactly what a room does not. Put this over an island and you get a bright pool on the worktop with the rest of the kitchen left soft, which is flattering at night and useful when someone is chopping. The same habit makes it a poor only light. If this is the single fitting in the room you will find the corners dark, so pair it with downlights or a ceiling fitting and let the cones do the close work they were shaped for.

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.
