Hallways are lit badly more often than any other room, usually by one wide fixture in the middle that leaves both ends dim. The alternative is several small ones, and small is what this fixture is: a glass drum 7.9 in across on a canopy narrower still. Three or four spaced along a corridor give even light from end to end and read as a deliberate rhythm rather than as a compromise. The brass collar is the only metal on show, so from below the line reads as glass with a warm band at the top. At 16.5 cm deep nothing intrudes into the walking space underneath.

How many do I need for a corridor?

That depends on the length, but the fixture is designed to be repeated. At 7.9 in across it is small enough that three or four in a line read as a rhythm rather than as clutter, which is the usual way to light a hallway evenly without relying on one bright fixture in the middle.

What bulb does it take?

An LED bulb or an Edison bulb on an E26 or E27 base, which are the standard medium screw fittings in North America and Europe. The bulb is not supplied. An Edison filament is visible through the glass, an LED gives a flatter and brighter output.

How big is the canopy?

The ceiling canopy is 5.9 in across by 0.8 in deep, or 15 by 2 cm, under a shade 7.9 in across. The canopy is narrower than the shade, so from below the fixture reads as a glass drum rather than as a plate with a shade attached.

What switch does it need?

The fixture is hardwired and works with common push switches, which are not included. The switch connects to an external wall light switch controlling the supply, so the circuit is opened and closed on the wall rather than at the fixture itself.

Is the glass clear or opaque?

The shade finish is white rather than clear, so the bulb inside is not read as a point of light from the floor. That is what makes the fixture comfortable at the low mounting height a hallway gives it, where a clear shade would put a bare filament at eye level on a staircase.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

No, it cannot. The rating is IP20, which the maker describes as damp-rated and not waterproof, for indoor use only. Any room where water or steam reaches the fixture falls outside that rating, so a hallway, a landing or a bedroom is where it belongs.

A corridor ceiling is usually the lowest in the house, and on a staircase landing a ceiling fixture can sit close to eye level on the way up. That is the argument for a white shade over a clear one. White glass hides the filament, so the fixture reads as an even glowing drum from any angle instead of as a bright point you look straight into. It costs a little output, which matters less here than in a living room, since a hallway needs enough light to move through rather than enough to read by. The E26 or E27 socket leaves the choice of bulb, warm or bright, open.

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.
