A Cord Made to Length Is Rare Enough That It Is Worth Measuring For It

Most plug in fittings arrive with a lead of a fixed length and you live with the result, which usually means either a taut cord that dictates where the fitting can go or a loop of slack gathered behind the furniture. This one is built to order, cord and plug type both, so the run can be matched to the wall it is going on. Measure from the mounting point down to the outlet, add enough to route the lead behind whatever sits below, and send that figure with the order. It is a small thing that decides whether the cord reads as deliberate or as an accident.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What is different from the hardwired stag head bar?

The supply, and nothing else. Same cast head, same tilting bracket, same three widths and the same 7.1 inch projection. This one arrives with a cord, a plug and an inline switch, so it goes up on two screws and reaches the nearest outlet instead of needing a box in the wall.

How long is the cord?

It is made to order rather than fixed, which is unusual and useful. Measure from the mounting point down to the outlet, add some slack for routing, and tell us that figure with the order so the lead arrives the right length rather than pooling on the floor.

Does the bar still tilt?

Yes. The joint under the stag head is the pivot and the tube swings on it after the plate is fixed. On a plug in fitting that matters more than usual, because you will often be hanging it where the outlet allows rather than exactly where the picture wants it.

Which finish for a room of framed prints?

Black recedes and suits contemporary art on a pale wall. White is the quietest of the three and almost disappears against light plaster.

Which width for my picture?

About two thirds of the frame width. The 15.7 inch bar under a small print, the 23.6 inch over a standard framed piece, the 31.5 inch over a wide landscape. A bar wider than the frame lights the wall on both sides of it, which reads as a mistake.

Can it go in a bathroom?

Only on a dry wall, and only if the outlet is safely placed. The rating is IP20 and there is no protection against water, plus a cord and a plug in the room. Over a mirror well clear of the shower it is workable, but the hardwired version is the tidier answer there.

The Tilting Bracket Matters More on a Plug In Bar Than on a Hardwired One

A hardwired bar is placed where the box is, and the box is placed where you want the light, because both are decided at the same time. A plug in bar is placed where the outlet can be reached, which is rarely the right height above a picture. That is where the pivot under the stag head earns its place: once the plate is screwed down, the tube swings to aim the beam down the face of the work rather than over the top of it. The same bar hung an inch high or an inch low still lights the picture properly, which is exactly the forgiveness a cord and an outlet make necessary.
