A pair lit on concrete gate pillars either side of a timber gate at dusk

Two Tiers Instead of One, Because a Gate Pier Is Wider Than a Fence Post

A flat cap works on a four inch timber post because the post is narrow and the cap is read from close up. On a rendered pier a foot or more across, the same flat shape reads as a lid and the pillar looks unfinished. The two tier build answers that. A flared roof sits above the lantern frame, so the fitting has a profile rather than an outline, and that profile is what carries from the road at night and from the house by day. The gain is in proportion rather than in output: the same warm light, arranged so the pillar looks like it was designed with a light on it rather than fitted with one afterwards.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What size suits a standard gate pillar?

On a rendered pillar around 12 inches square, the 13.2 inch cap overhangs by half an inch on each side and reads correctly. The 17.7 inch suits a 16 inch pier, and the 22 inch is for a wide masonry pier at a main entrance.

What is the difference between Model A and Model B?

The frame detailing around the lantern section. Both share the same flared roof, the same footprint and the same output at each size, so the choice is visual.

How much light does it actually give?

About 3 watts at the smallest size and about 7 watts at the largest. That marks an entrance and puts a pool of light on the pillar and the ground beside it. It is not enough to light a driveway on its own.

Does the solar version look different?

The panel sits flat in the upper roof, out of the sight line from the ground, so the cap reads the same either way. What changes is what feeds it and how the output behaves after several overcast days.

Can I fit it to a pillar that was never wired?

Yes, with the solar build. It needs nothing run to the pillar, which is the usual reason people choose it on masonry that is already standing. The wired build needs a supply and a cable into the pier.

Is it made for open weather?

Yes. It is rated IP65, dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction, and a gate pillar is the most exposed position on a property. Do not immerse it and keep the panel clear of overhanging branches.

Wired or Solar From the Same Body, So the Pillar Decides and Not the Design

The decision people expect to make here is about looks, and it is not. The roof, the frame, the panels and the footprint are identical on both builds, and so is the warm light. What changes is what feeds the LED. The wired build runs from the house circuit and gives the same output on the darkest night of the year, but it needs a cable into the pier, which on finished masonry means chasing or a surface run. The solar build carries the panel flat in the roof and needs nothing at all, which is why it suits a pillar that is already standing. Output then follows the sky, and after a week of overcast weather the evening is shorter.
