Every Pleat Holds a Shadow, So the Lit Shade Reads as Lines Not a Disc

A flat shade lights evenly and that is the end of it. A pleated one behaves differently, and it is the whole reason to choose this fitting. The fabric is gathered into folds that radiate out from the center, so when the light comes on each ridge catches it and each valley beside the ridge stays darker. What you see is a rosette of narrow warm lines, brightest at the outer edge where the folds open out, rather than one glowing circle. The effect changes as you move, because the angle you stand at decides which ridges face you. Unlit, the same folds give the shade a texture that a smooth drum does not have, which matters on a wall you walk past in daylight.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What makes it read as French?

The pleated rosette above all. A gathered fabric shade on a slim curved arm is the language of a French bedroom light rather than a modern one, and the brass and the pale fabric carry it. The wood plate is the part that is not period, which is what keeps the piece from reading as a reproduction.

Is the shade real fabric?

Yes, fabric gathered into pleats over a frame rather than a printed or pressed panel. That is why the folds hold a shadow line and why the shade softens as it lights rather than going evenly bright.

Is there a bulb to buy?

The LED is integrated at a warm 3000K, so nothing is ordered separately and nothing is swapped later. Any work at the end of its life is a job for a qualified electrician.

Can I mount a pair?

The shade faces straight out and the arm curves in one plane, so two either side of a bed or a mirror read as a matched pair with nothing pointing the wrong way when mirrored.

Which wood tone should I choose?

The walnut gives the most contrast with the white shade and the brass, which suits a room with dark wood furniture. The pale wood keeps the whole fitting light and lets the pleats be the thing you notice.

How do I clean it?

Let it cool. Dust the pleated shade with a soft brush, working along the folds rather than across them, and keep water off the fabric. Buff the brass arm dry and wipe the wood plate along the grain.

The Arm Hooks Up Rather Than Out, Which Keeps the Piece Close to the Wall

Look at how the brass is bent. Instead of reaching straight out and hanging a shade at the end, the arm leaves the wood plate low, curves forward and then turns upward, so the shade ends up above the plate and only a short way in front of it. Two things follow. The fitting stays close to the plaster, which is what lets it sit beside a bed or in a passage without catching anyone. And the light leaves from above the arm rather than below it, so the wash goes up the wall and out into the room instead of straight down onto the nightstand. It is a small piece of geometry that decides where the sconce can be used and how the room reads once it is on.
