The backplate is carved out of wood by hand rather than pressed or shaped, and the iron arms are bent and scrolled rather than cut from a straight run. That alone would give a shape with more character than most sconces. The finish is what completes it: an old white, sanded and polished back so the paint thins at every raised edge and the carving and the grain come through underneath. The result reads as a piece that has been painted and repainted and lived in a room for decades, which is the effect that shape is reaching for. Because the sanding is done by hand, the pattern of wear differs from piece to piece. A pair will match in shape and in tone but not in the exact places the finish has thinned.

The single arm is 10 cm wide and suits a narrow wall, a powder room or the side of a doorway. The two arm is 30 cm and holds a wider wall, above a mantel or either side of a bed. Both are 28 cm tall, so they can be mixed in one room without the heights disagreeing.

What is the finish?

An old white, sanded and polished back so the carving and the grain show through at the raised edges. It is meant to read as a painted piece that has been in a room for a long time rather than as a new one, so slight differences between pieces are part of it.

Which lamps does it take?

One E14 lamp per arm, up to 15W, not included. A candle shaped filament or LED lamp is the one that suits the open cups, since the lamp is visible and becomes part of the look. Keep to the 15W limit.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, with a dimmable lamp on a compatible wall dimmer. Neither is included, and the dimmer has to match the lamp, so buy the two together. A dimmable candle lamp is what makes this fitting read as candlelight late in the evening.

Is it heavy?

About 2 kg, which is light enough for a standard wall fixing but heavy enough that a plasterboard wall wants a proper anchor rather than a plug pushed into the board. Fix into a stud if there is one where you want it.

How do I clean it?

Let the lamps cool. Dust the carving with a soft dry brush, since the worn finish holds dust in the cuts. Wipe the iron arms with a dry cloth and use a barely damp one only on marks, drying at once.

Open Candle Cups, Which Means the Lamp You Choose Is Part of the Design

There is no shade on this fitting. Each iron arm ends in a turned candle cup with the lamp standing in it, so whatever you screw in is visible from every angle and becomes part of what the piece looks like. That is a decision rather than an omission, and it means the lamp matters more here than on a shaded sconce. A candle shaped filament lamp with a warm tone carries the look; a stubby frosted globe does not. Each arm takes an E14 up to 15W, which keeps the output low on purpose, closer to the level of the candles the form is quoting than to a reading light. Put it on a compatible dimmer with a dimmable lamp and it will go lower still.

Returns and Refunds

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.
