A pair lit on concrete gate pillars either side of a driveway at dusk

The Same Face on All Four Sides, Which Is What an Entrance Actually Needs

A gate pier is seen from more directions than any other position on a property. From the road at night, from the drive as you turn in, from the garden, and from a window in the house. A fitting with a front and a back is wrong in at least two of those views. Here the round disc repeats on every face, so the cube gives the same reading whichever way you approach, and a pair on two piers stays symmetrical from every angle rather than only from the one the photographer chose. The corners between the discs stay dark, which is what keeps the silhouette square by day and legible at night.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Why a disc rather than a full lit face?

Because a smaller lit area at a lower brightness is easier to look at than a whole glowing side. The corners stay dark, which keeps the cube reading as a cube, and the round shape is what lets you identify the fitting from the road.

Which size for a pair of gate piers?

The 15.7 inch on a pier around 16 inches across, the 11.8 inch on a narrower rendered pillar. Take the 19.7 inch only on a wide masonry pier, where a smaller cap would disappear under the mass of the stonework.

Does it light the driveway surface?

Only around the base of the pier. This is a marker rather than a floodlight: it shows where the entrance is and puts a pool on the pillar. For the surface of a long drive, plan bollards or path lights along it as well.

What is the difference between the wired and solar builds?

Only the supply. The body, the discs and the output are the same. Wired runs from the house circuit and holds its level all year; solar carries the panel in the lid and needs nothing run to the pier, but follows the sky.

Is there a switch included?

The wired build works with a common push switch, which is not supplied, and is usually put on the same circuit as the rest of the entrance. The solar build switches itself on at dusk with no wiring at all.

Can it stand full exposure on an open drive?

Yes. The rating is IP65, dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction, which covers rain and sprinklers. Do not immerse it, and keep the lid clear of leaves so the panel can still see the sky.

Three Sizes, and the Width of the Pier Is the Only Measurement That Matters

The height of this fitting changes with its footprint, from 8.3 inches on the smallest to 13.8 on the largest, so all three keep the same proportion. That means the decision is made with a tape measure on top of the pier and nothing else. On a rendered pillar around a foot across, the 11.8 inch cube overhangs by a fraction and reads as a cap. On a 16 inch pier, the 15.7. On a wide masonry pier at a main entrance, the 19.7, which is tall enough to carry the mass of the stone under it. A cap that is too small does not look modest, it looks like the wrong part.
