A run lit along a paved terrace beside a house with glass doors

Knee Height Is the Whole Reason This One Works Along a Drive or a Garden Walk

The instinct with a driveway is to reach for a lamp post, and it is usually the wrong instinct. A head at five or six feet puts a bright source exactly where a driver's eyes are, which is why a badly chosen post lamp dazzles on the way in and lights the drive worse than nothing at all. This one stops at 23.6 inches. The head is below the eyeline of anyone in a car and well below the eyeline of anyone walking, so what you see is the surface, the kerb and the planting rather than the fixture. It also puts the glass where a passing wheel cannot reach it, set back on a plate rather than perched on a stem.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Wired or solar on a driveway?

Wired where a supply already runs along the drive and the light has to work the same every night of the year. Solar where nothing is buried yet, because trenching the length of a driveway costs more than the fixtures do.

What bulb does the wired build take?

An E26 or E27 lamp, not supplied, so the color and the output are your choice. Pick one rated for an enclosed damp fixture and keep the wattage modest, since the head is small and the panels are close to the lamp.

Why only 23.6 inches tall?

Because edge lighting works from low down. A fixture at knee height lights the surface and the kerb without putting a bright head in the eyeline of anyone driving in, which is exactly what a taller lamp post does.

How far apart should they go?

Eight to twelve feet along a drive keeps the pools of light touching at the edges. Further apart than that and the run reads as separate dots rather than a lit edge, which defeats the purpose of a series.

What is involved in the install?

The solar build needs only the foot plate fixed down. The wired build needs a cable run and a weatherproof connection at each position, which is an electrician job and worth planning before the paving goes back.

Will it take a hard winter?

It is rated IP65 against dust and water jets from any side, so rain, snow and sprinklers are within it. Do not immerse it. Brush snow off the cap on the solar build or it stops charging until you do.

The bollard lit on a stone path beside a boulder and tall grasses

Four Lit Faces, Which Is What a Bollard on an Open Drive Actually Needs

A wall light has a back and a front. A bollard standing in the open has neither, and a head that lights one way only will always be facing the wrong way from somewhere. The lantern here carries a white panel on all four faces, so the same fixture reads identically from the road, from the house, from the lawn and from the path, and a run of them looks deliberate from every approach instead of correct from one. The panels are acrylic rather than glass, which matters on a drive: a reversing bumper or a stray stone from a mower chips acrylic and shatters glass.
