A Dome Seamed From Linen Panels, Scalloped at the Hem and Lined With Seams

A dome is not something you can cut from one flat piece of fabric, which is why this shade is built from panels. Each panel is seamed to the next over a curved rib, and that construction does three things at once: it gives the shade its rounded profile, it breaks the hem into a gentle scallop instead of a hard circle, and it puts a run of dark vertical lines across the surface once the lamp is lit, because the seams are denser than the linen around them. The panels also carry a faint printed pattern, the kind you see standing at the lamp and lose entirely from a chair, so it works as texture rather than as decoration. The result is a shade that is plain from across a room and detailed up close, which is the way most old lampshades were made.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Why is the shade segmented?

Because a dome cannot be made from one flat piece of fabric. The panels are seamed over curved ribs, which is what gives the shade its shape, the gentle scallop around the hem and the run of dark seam lines when it is lit.

Is there a pattern on the linen?

Yes, a faint printed pattern on the panels. It shows when you are close to the lamp and disappears from a seated distance, so it adds texture rather than decoration.

How does the switch work?

A beaded pull chain hanging beside the stem under the shade. There is no button on the cord, so the lamp is switched by reaching under the dome, which is worth knowing if it is going on a high shelf.

Which bulb does it take?

An E14, which is the small screw base rather than the standard large one. An E26 or E27 bulb will not fit, and none is supplied with the lamp.

Which finish should I choose?

Walnut with gold is the warmer pairing and sits with wood furniture. Black with sand nickel is cooler and more graphic, and it holds its outline against a pale or patterned wall.

How do I clean it?

A lint roller or a soft brush on the linen, working along each panel rather than across the seams. Use a dry cloth on the brass foot to avoid water spots.

A Brushed Brass Disc Foot, a Pull Chain, and an E14 Socket Worth Checking

Below the dome the lamp is a slim dark stem with a gold collar, standing on a brushed brass disc that is noticeably wider than the stem needs. That disc is the engineering: a 32 cm dome sitting high on a thin stem wants a low, heavy footprint, and the brass provides it while keeping the cord exit down at table level. The switch is a beaded pull chain hanging beside the socket, not a button on the cord, so the lamp is operated by reaching under the shade, which matters if it is going on a high shelf or behind a sofa. And the socket takes an E14, the small screw base, rather than the standard E26 or E27, so a bulb from the drawer will probably not fit. None is supplied with the lamp.
