A Closed Top Decides Where the Light Goes Before Any Bulb Has Been Chosen

Open shades split their output between the table and the ceiling, which lifts the whole room and softens the pool below. A dome closed at the top does the opposite and sends everything down, so the table is brighter and the room around it stays darker. Neither is better in the abstract: over a dining table, where you want the setting lit and the rest quiet, closed wins.

Does the closed top waste light?

It sends everything downward instead of washing the ceiling, so the table gets more and the room gets less. Over a dining table that is the right trade; as the only light in a living room it leaves the corners darker than an open shade would.

What bulb is supplied?

An E26 or E27 LED in the color chosen at the order, so the fitting works the day it is wired. The socket is a standard screw base, so replacing it later is ordinary work.

How dark is the amber?

It is a light honey tint that warms the light rather than blocking it. Against a white wall the shade reads clearly as a colored object even unlit, which is most of the reason to choose it over a plain glass dome.

What does the three color version do?

It switches between warm, neutral and cool from the wall switch, which suits a kitchen table used for work in the day and dinner at night. The two fixed versions keep one setting for good.

How low should it hang?

Thirty to thirty six inches above a dining table, or about 32 inches above a counter. The twisted cord is cut to length at installation, with a little slack kept above the clamp for later adjustment.

Does the twisted cord suit a modern room?

It reads as a period detail and it is the part that places the fitting, in the same way the stepped collar does. In a plain modern kitchen it adds the one older element that keeps the room from looking like a showroom.

Strip those two details away and the amber dome is a shape any factory makes today. The ribbed chrome collar between the glass and the cord, and the fabric braid above it, both come from fittings of the nineteen thirties and they cost almost nothing to include. They are also the first things anyone notices at eye level above a table, which is where the money is worth spending.

Returns and Refunds

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. If you change your mind within 24 hours of placing your order, before it has been processed, we will refund you right away. After an order has shipped, please follow the standard return process described above.
