Two flat post lights glowing on pale garden steps beside a potted plant

The Light Leaves Through a Gap, Which Is Why It Never Sits in Your Eye Line

A post cap with a glowing lamp in it becomes the brightest thing in a dark garden, and the eye goes to the fitting instead of to the path. This one is built the other way around. The diffuser runs as a narrow band between the body and the base, so the output leaves sideways and downward and lands on the post and the ground beside it. Walk past and you read a lit line at knee or waist height. Look from a window across the garden and you see the steps rather than a row of bright points. It is the difference between lighting a place and lighting a fixture, and it is decided by where the gap is, not by how many watts are behind it.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Which size suits a 4 by 4 post?

The 7.9 inch. It overhangs a nominal four inch timber post by about two inches on each side, which reads as a cap. The 11.8 inch suits a masonry pillar, and the two larger sizes are made for a wide gate pier rather than a fence post.

Where does the light actually go?

Out sideways through the gap around the body, then down the face of the post. Nothing is thrown upward. From a window you see a lit line and a glow on the post, not a lamp, which is why it works at low level along a run of steps.

Wired or solar, how do I choose?

Take wired if there is already a supply at the post and you want the same output every night. Take solar if the post is standing and you do not want to open the ground. The body and the diffuser are identical on both builds.

Is there a bulb to change?

The LED is integrated in warm light and is not replaceable. Nothing is opened once the fitting is on the post, and there is no lamp to match later when one fails in a run of several.

Does the remote have to point at the fitting?

Yes. The receiver sits on the body, so the remote needs a clear line of sight. A hedge, a gate leaf or a wall between you and the post will block it, which is worth knowing before you plan where the fitting goes.

Can it sit where sprinklers reach it?

Yes. It is rated IP65, which is dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction. Rain and garden sprinklers are within that. It must not be immersed, so keep it off any surface that floods.

Four Sizes From a Fence Post to a Gate Pier, and the Post Picks the Size

At 7.9 inches square the body caps a nominal four inch timber post and overhangs it by about two inches on each side, which is the proportion that reads as a cap rather than a hat. At 11.8 inches it suits a rendered or brick pillar. The 15.7 and 19.7 inch bodies are made for a wide gate pier, and the largest weighs about 24 kilograms, so the pier has to be built for it rather than simply tall enough. Measure the top of the post before anything else, and measure the post itself rather than the cap already on it, because a weathered timber post often sits a fraction under its nominal size.
