Two open frame cubes lit on gate posts beside a timber slat fence

The Outer Frame Is What the Fitting Looks Like for the Sixteen Hours It Is Off

A post light is lit for about eight hours and visible for twenty four. Most designs ignore that and read as a dark lump in daylight, which is the moment a gate or a boundary wall is actually seen by everyone who passes. The open frame changes the daytime reading. What you see is a black outline with sky through it, sitting on the pier as a piece of geometry rather than a lamp waiting for dusk. At night the small core inside lights up and the frame becomes a border around it. The shape works in both states, and that is unusual enough in this category to be the reason to choose it.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What is the difference between the low and tall versions?

Only the height. A low version at 9.8 inches square stands 5.5 inches tall, the tall version of the same footprint stands 10.2. The footprint decides what post it fits, the height decides how much presence it has.

Can I mix low and tall along one wall?

That is what the range is for. Keep one footprint so every cap covers its pier correctly, then use the tall version on the gate piers and the low version on the intermediate ones. The line along the wall stays even.

Is the outer frame structural or decorative?

Both. It carries the lit core and it is what gives the fitting a shape when the light is off, which is most of the day. A solid body would read as a block; the open frame keeps the outline and lets the sky through.

Which build should I take for a post that is already up?

The solar one. It carries the panel in the lid and needs nothing run to the post, so a finished masonry pier does not have to be opened. Wired is the answer only where a supply is already there or the ground is open.

Does the open frame collect leaves?

Some, in autumn, in the gap between the frame and the core. It brushes out with a hand or a soft brush. Clear the lid at the same time, because leaves sitting on the solar panel stop it charging altogether.

Is it built for an unprotected position?

Yes. It is rated IP65, dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction, which is what a post top on an open boundary needs. It should not be immersed and does not belong on ground that floods.

Six Sizes in Two Heights, So One Boundary Wall Can Use a Single Footprint

Three footprints, each in a low and a tall build, is a more useful range than six unrelated sizes. On a real boundary the piers are rarely all the same importance: two wide ones at the gate, a row of narrower ones along the wall. Pick the footprint that caps those piers correctly, then take the tall build at the gate and the low build for the rest. Every cap sits properly on its pier, the gate still announces itself, and the line of light along the top of the wall stays level instead of stepping up and down with the hardware. The output is the same on both heights, so nothing gets brighter, only taller.
