Two lit on vertical timber cladding beside a doorway and a garden chair

Flat Bars and a Cap That Oversails, Which Is the Whole Craftsman Grammar

Strip a craftsman fixture down and there is almost nothing to it: bars of flat stock, a lid wider than the body, and corners that meet at ninety degrees. No turning, no casting, no applied ornament. That restraint is exactly why the style has lasted and why it fails so often in reproduction, where a maker adds a curve or a faceted pane and the whole logic collapses. Here the frame steps out from the wall in two planes, the cap runs past the frame on all four sides, and the glass is a plain cylinder. Every line you can see is doing structural work. Nothing has been added to make it look handmade.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What makes a fixture craftsman rather than traditional?

Flat stock instead of turned or cast curves, a cap that oversails the body, and right angles throughout. There is no scrollwork and no finial. The frame is the ornament, which is the whole idea of the style.

Is the glass leaded or shaped?

Neither. It is a plain opal cylinder, which is the honest reading. Faceted panes and false lead lines are what make most craftsman reproductions look like reproductions, and this one leaves them out.

Which bulb suits the opal glass?

A warm LED around 2700K. Opal glass hides the filament anyway, so an Edison lamp is spent on it; what matters is keeping the output modest so the cylinder glows rather than glares.

Which size for a standard door?

The 15.4 inch as a single fixture beside an 80 inch door, or the 12.2 inch used as a flanking pair. The frame reads wider than the glass, so both sit larger on the wall than the bare figures suggest.

How does the frame mount?

Hardwired through the back plate on AC 110-240V. The plate wants a flat surface, so vertical timber cladding is fine as shown and lap siding needs a block behind it to seal properly.

Is it made for an exposed elevation?

Yes, at IP65 it is sealed against dust and proof against water jets from any side. Do not immerse it. The frame collects a little dust in its steps, so brush it out once a season.

The lantern lit on a dark slate garden wall beside a window opening

The Frame Throws Its Own Shadow Lines Across the Render Wall Behind It

Because the cage stands proud of the back plate rather than sitting flush against it, the light inside escapes sideways past the bars and lays a set of hard lines on the surface behind. On smooth render they read as clean stripes running up and down beside the fixture. On brick or slate they break over the texture and soften. Either way the wall becomes part of the fixture at night, which is something a flush mounted lantern cannot do at all. It is worth thinking about when choosing the position: give it a foot or two of clear surface on each side and that shadow pattern has somewhere to land.
