Close view of the lit scalloped shade above the fluted column

A Scalloped Parasol Shade, Piped in Dark Trim Along Every Seam and Hem

The shade is cream fabric seamed into panels and shaped as a shallow parasol, and what makes it read from across a room is the piping. A dark brown trim is sewn along each seam and the whole way around the hem, so the scalloped edge is outlined rather than left to blend into the fabric, and the seams become a set of fine radiating lines rather than invisible joints. That single detail is the difference between a plain pale shade and one with a drawn shape, and it is also why the lamp looks finished when it is switched off. Lit, the cream fabric warms and the piping stays dark, so the outline holds. It is a traditional trick, used on lampshades in the 1930s and 1940s for exactly this reason, and it costs nothing in light output because the trim sits on the seams.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What is the dark line around the shade?

Piping: a dark brown trim sewn along every seam and around the scalloped hem. It outlines the shape, which is what makes the scallops read clearly from a distance instead of blending into the cream fabric.

What does fluting do to the base?

Narrow vertical grooves are cut the whole way up the tapered column, so the surface catches light in alternating light and dark bands. It gives a plain tapered shape a texture that shows from across a room.

Why is it described as a console lamp?

Because of the proportion. At 35 cm across and 55 cm tall it is taller than a bedside lamp and wide enough to hold a console, a sideboard or a dresser without looking lost on it.

Which bulb does it take?

An E14, the small screw base, not the standard E26 or E27. A large screw bulb will not fit and none is supplied, so check the drawer before the lamp arrives.

Is the shade cream or white?

Cream, warmer than white, which is what keeps the dark piping from looking harsh against it and gives the lamp its slightly aged look even when it is switched off.

How do I clean it?

A lint roller or a soft brush on the shade, working along the piping rather than across it. Use a soft dry brush in the flutes of the column, where dust settles, then wipe along the grain with a barely damp cloth.

Scalloped shade lamp lit on a walnut dresser beside a made bed

A Fluted Walnut Column, and the Proportion That Suits a Console Rather Than a Bed

Under the shade the column is tapered and fluted: narrow vertical grooves cut the whole way up the walnut, which catch light in alternating bands and give a very plain shape a texture legible from across a room. It is the same device used on classical columns and for the same reason, to stop a large smooth surface reading as dead. The proportion then decides where the lamp belongs. At 35 cm across the shade and 55 cm tall it stands above the usual bedside range, so on a nightstand the hem would sit above the reading line, while on a console, a sideboard or a dresser it fills the vertical space properly and lights the wall and the surface together. One practical note: the socket takes an E14 small screw bulb rather than a standard E26 or E27, and none is supplied.
