A Foot of Reach Is What This Shape Was Invented For, and It Still Solves Deep Frames

The arched arm and the shade on a joint are not styling. They are the old answer to a real problem: a picture in a deep gilt frame cannot be lit by anything that sits close to the wall. At 23 to 32 cm from the plaster, the shade here stands in front of the outer moulding, so the beam starts beyond the frame and falls down the face of the work. On an engraving under glass that also moves the reflection out of the viewer's eye line, which is the second half of the problem and the one people notice only after fitting. Nothing else in this group reaches this far except the jointed bronze arm, and that one is a modern integrated bar rather than a classical shade.

How deep does it sit?

Between about 23 and 32 cm from the wall, which is 9 to 12.6 inches, depending on how the arm and the shade are set. That is the deepest reach in this group, and it is what lets the bar clear a heavy gilt frame so the beam lands on the picture rather than on the moulding.

Chrome or gold?

Same price, different rooms. Chrome is cool and reads as modern beside chrome taps, steel and a white bathroom. Gold is warm and belongs with gilt frames, oak and brass. The photographs show gold against engravings on pale and dark blue walls and chrome against prints on a desk wall, which is a fair guide.

Which lamp should I fit?

An E14 lamp, not included. Warm 2700K to 3000K for oils, wood and gilt. Neutral 3500K to 4000K for pencil, engravings and black and white photography. A small candle shape sits inside the shade better than a globe.

Is it made for a bathroom?

The shape works above a mirror, and the rating is IP20, meaning no water protection at all, so it belongs on a dry wall clear of the shower and of spray. We do not repeat the damp rated line that appears beside that IP20 figure.

Which width for my frame?

About half to two thirds of the frame. The 18.1 inch bar suits a frame of 24 to 30 inches, the 24.4 inch bar a frame of 36 to 40 inches. Above a mirror, center the bar rather than working to two thirds.

How do I clean chrome?

Switch off and let the lamp cool. A dry soft cloth for dust and a barely damp one for marks, dried at once. Chrome shows every smear, so finish with a dry pass. Keep abrasives away from both finishes.

Chrome or gold is chosen at order at the same price, so the fitting can be matched to the taps in a bathroom or to the frames in a hall without changing the shape. How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.

Can I change my mind after ordering?
