Open Wire Cages Cast Thin Shadows, So the Ceiling Gets a Pattern of Its Own

An open cage does not hide the lamp and does not soften it. What it does is break the light into a fan of thin shadows that climbs the walls and crosses the ceiling, sharpest with a clear filament lamp and softest with a frosted one. In the brick and timber rooms in these photographs that pattern is doing real work, adding texture to plain surfaces. Two practical notes. Sharp shadows need a clear lamp, so if glare over a table worries you, accept a softer pattern with a frosted lamp. And the closer to the ceiling it hangs, the tighter the pattern reads.

What does the cage actually do?

It protects the lamp and frames it. An open wire cage does not diffuse light, so the filament shows through the bars and casts a pattern of thin shadows on the ceiling. That pattern is half the reason to buy the fitting.

Which lamps should I use?

One E26 lamp per cage, not included. A clear filament lamp gives the sharpest shadow pattern. A frosted lamp softens both the pattern and the glare, which is the kinder choice over a dining table.

How much drop does it need?

120 cm from the canopy to the bottom of the cages, before the ceiling height is counted. That asks for nine feet or more over a table. The drop can be shortened on site by taking up the suspension.

Is there wood in it?

Hemp rope and iron only. The warm tone in the photographs is the natural rope, and this fitting carries no wood tag.

How do the three sizes differ?

Only in width and the number of cages: 55 cm on four lights, 68 on six, 78 on eight. The 120 cm drop is the same on all three, so the ceiling requirement does not change with size.

How do I clean the cages?

Use a soft brush rather than a cloth, which snags on the wire. Let the lamps cool first. Brush the rope dry and keep water away from it.

A Fixed Drop of 120 Centimeters, Which Sets the Ceiling You Need First

The three sizes change width and nothing else. Four cages at 55 cm, six at 68, eight at 78, and every one of them falls 120 cm from the canopy. So the first question is not how wide your table is, it is how tall your room is. Over a dining table you want the cages to finish 30 to 36 inches above the top, which means a ceiling of nine feet to have it look right without ducking. In an eight foot room you would be shortening the suspension hard and losing the proportions the fitting was drawn for. Measure the ceiling, then pick the width.

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.
