Is the strap real leather?

The maker lists the fitting as plated glass with leather accents, and the strap is the part that carries the shade rather than a decorative band. Keep it dry when cleaning, since leather that gets soaked and then dries near a warm bulb will stiffen.

What does plated glass look like when it is off?

The gray, black and amber versions read as a tinted mirror, picking up the room around them, which is why they sit well against a brick or a stone wall. Switch the bulb on and the plating turns semi transparent and the shade glows from inside. The milk white version is matte in both states.

Can several be hung at different heights?

That is the arrangement in the stairwell picture, four shades on separate cords at staggered drops. Each is its own fitting with its own ceiling point, so the heights are set independently once they are all hanging.

How much light does one give?

The shade is open at the bottom and solid above, so almost everything goes downward onto a surface. One over a nightstand or a side table is enough for that spot; for a whole room you want two or three, or something that also throws light upward.
