Brass bar lit above a landscape painting over a dark wood fireplace mantel

The Arm Is the Whole Argument for This Shape, and It Has Not Changed in a Century

Every part of this fitting exists to get the tube away from the wall. The plate is round and stepped so it can carry a single arm rather than a pair. The arm curves up and forward instead of running straight out, which keeps the joint low and the tube high. The result is 8.7 inches of projection, and that number is why galleries have used this silhouette since picture lights were invented. Light that leaves the tube in front of the frame lands on the paint. Light that leaves level with the frame lands on the frame. A slim bar screwed flat to the wall cannot solve that, however good the LED inside it is.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What does bronze look like next to antique gold?

The bronze is a deeper, browner metal that settles into a dark paneled room or a walnut vanity without adding a bright note. The antique gold is warmer and reads closer to aged brass, which is the one to take if the taps, the frames or the hardware in the room are already warm metal.

Why does the 8.7 inch projection matter?

Because the beam has to clear the front of the frame before it reaches the picture. A bar closer to the wall lights the top rail of a heavy frame and leaves the canvas below it in shadow. At 8.7 inches the light leaves in front of most framed work, which is why this shape has survived in galleries for a century.

Can it light a mirror as well as a painting?

The long arm puts the tube forward of the glass, so the light lands on the face rather than skimming the mirror. In a bathroom keep it above the mirror and on a dry wall, since the rating is IP20.

Is the arm adjustable?

The curve is fixed and the tube hangs from it at a set angle, so the aim is decided by where you fix the plate. Measure the frame and set the height first. If you want to re-aim the beam later, a tilting bar is the shape to look at instead.

Which width for a picture?

Match the frame, not the wall. About two thirds of the frame width reads right: the 17.7 inch bar under a small print, the 22.8 inch over a standard framed piece, the 29.5 inch over a wide landscape or a double vanity mirror.

Does it need an electrician?

Yes. It is hardwired, with the supply coming through the wall into a junction box behind the round plate, and a common push switch controlling it. That switch is not supplied, so it is wired back to the circuit the room already has.

It Reads as a Gallery Fitting in a Hallway and as a Mirror Light in a Bathroom

Along a hallway of framed photographs, repeated over each piece above wainscoting, it behaves as gallery lighting: warm, narrow, aimed at paper. Above a framed mirror on subway tile, over a wood vanity, the same fitting turns into a vanity light, and the long arm that was there for the frame now puts the beam in front of the glass where a face can use it. Nothing about the fitting changes between those two jobs. Only the height you fix it at, and the width you pick to suit whatever is underneath.
