Lit cubes on pillars beside a pool with planting behind them at dusk

Pressed Glass Has a Surface of Its Own, Which Is Why It Suits Brick and Stone

A flat acrylic panel is the plainest way to light a cube and the easiest to spot. It gives one even sheet of light with nothing in it, and against a textured wall it always reads as the modern part bolted onto the old part. The glass here is pressed with an irregular face, so the output scatters as it passes through and the panel carries small variations across its width. By day, with the fitting off, the same texture catches light from the sky rather than sitting blank. On brick, cut stone or a rendered pier with a float finish, that is what makes the lantern look like it belongs to the wall it sits on.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Why textured glass on a brick pillar?

Because brick already has a surface. A smooth lit panel sitting on it reads as a separate object, while pressed glass with an irregular face carries its own texture and settles against the coursing rather than fighting it.

What is the difference between the two styles?

The frame detailing around the glass. Both share the footprint, the height, the glass and the output at each size, so the decision is visual.

Which size for a standard brick pier?

The 9.8 inch on a pier around nine inches across, which is a single brick length plus mortar. Take the 13.8 inch on a pier built one and a half bricks wide, which is the common size for a driveway entrance.

Is there a wired version?

This model is solar only, with the cell in the top. The cube and disc models in this range are offered wired as well, if the pier already carries a supply and you want the same output every night of the year.

Can the light color be changed?

Warm light is the build sold here. Neutral and cool versions of this model exist, so tell us if you need one of those and we will source it rather than send you the wrong tone.

How exposed can the position be?

Fully exposed. It is rated IP65, dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction, which is what a pier at a boundary takes all year. It must not be immersed and should not sit where water pools.

Two Sizes That Map Onto the Way Brick Piers Are Actually Built on Site

Brick piers come in a small number of real widths, because they are built from a module. A single brick length plus mortar gives a pier around nine inches across, and one and a half bricks gives around fourteen. The two sizes here, 9.8 and 13.8 inches square, sit directly on top of those two, with an inch or less of overhang in each case. That is the proportion that reads as a cap. Measure the pier at the top course rather than at the base, because a pier with a corbelled or coped head is wider up there than the brickwork below suggests.
