Seven Inches of Projection, Because a Deep Gilt Frame Casts Its Own Shadow

The failure mode of a picture light over an ornate frame is easy to picture and hard to fix after the fact. The frame is two or three inches deep with a raised outer moulding, the fitting stands close to the wall, and the beam clips that outer edge on its way down. What you get is a bright band on the moulding and a dim upper third on the canvas, which is the opposite of the intent. This fitting is built for that case: a single scrolled arm carries the tube about 17.8 cm clear of the wall, in front of the frame face rather than level with it. Above a plain flat print that depth is more than you need. Above a gilt oval mirror or a framed oil it is the difference between lighting the picture and lighting its frame.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Why does the 7 inch projection matter?

Because an ornate frame is thick. A picture light that stands only three or four inches off the wall sits behind the top edge of a deep gilt frame, and the beam then grazes the moulding and leaves a shadow across the top of the picture. Seven inches puts the tube in front of that edge, so the light lands on the canvas.

Is the brass solid or plated?

The body is cast and finished in brass tone, and we describe it as cast brass and no more than that. If a solid unplated alloy matters for a specification, write to us and we will put the answer in writing.

Does the tube turn?

Yes, on the joint behind it, by hand. It tips down to drop the beam onto a picture or a mirror and holds where you set it. The arm itself is fixed to the plate, so the movement is in the tube rather than in the reach.

Can it go above a bathroom mirror?

Above the mirror on a dry wall, yes, and it suits an oval gilt mirror in a traditional bathroom. The rating is IP20, meaning no water protection, so keep it clear of the shower and of spray.

What light color is it?

Warm, and fixed. The LED is built into the tube, so the color is decided at the factory and cannot be changed by swapping a lamp. Warm is the right register for cast brass, oils and gilt, which is what this fitting is made for.

How do I clean the cast pattern?

Use a dry soft brush along the raised leaf work rather than a cloth, which catches on the edges. Wipe the plain sections with a dry cloth and lift marks with a barely damp one, drying at once. Keep polishes and abrasives off the finish.

A Cast Body and Turned Finials, Which Is a Choice About the Room and Not About Output

Nothing about the leaf pattern, the shell plate or the finials makes the light better. They make it belong somewhere. In a room of gilt frames, an oval mirror, wallpaper and wood, a plain extruded bar reads as equipment that arrived later, while a cast body with turned ends reads as part of the same family as the mirror it sits above. That is the whole case for spending more here than on the plain bars in the range. It also sets the limit: against a flat modern canvas on a white wall the ornament competes with the art instead of serving it, and one of the slim bars is the honest recommendation in that room.
