Close view of one globe showing the plated upper half and clear lower half

Five globes at five different heights, which is what keeps a wide fixture from looking flat

Put five identical lights on one plane and the result is a ring, which reads as a single flat shape from anywhere in the room. This fixture staggers them instead. The brass arms leave the central column at different lengths and different heights, so each globe sits at its own point in space and the group forms a loose cluster rather than a circle. Walking under it the spheres move against each other and the reflections in the plated halves shift with you. That is a lot of visual movement from a piece that is only 44 cm deep, and it is the reason the design works on a flat ceiling where a chandelier would be out of place.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Why is each globe half plated?

So that the fixture reflects and transmits at the same time. The plated upper half acts as a small mirror that bounces light back toward the ceiling and picks up the brass of the arms, while the clear lower half lets the bulb show and sends light into the room. Seen from a seat the globes read as half gold, half glass.

How wide is it and how far does it drop?

31.5 in across by 17.3 in high, or 80 by 44 cm, in a single size. The arms are staggered at different lengths and heights from a short central column, so the spread is horizontal. That is what lets a fixture this wide stay under 45 cm deep on a standard ceiling.

What bulbs does it take?

Five E26 or E27 screw bulbs, LED or Edison filament, rated at a maximum of 40W each. The globes are clear underneath, so the bulb is visible and its shape counts. A round filament bulb suits the geometry of the piece, and the maker does not supply bulbs with the fixture.

Can it be dimmed?

That depends entirely on the bulbs. The fixture carries no driver and no dimming circuit of its own, so fitting five dimmable bulbs and wiring the supply through a compatible wall dimmer gives dimming, while standard bulbs give none. The maker notes that any bulb supplied by default is not a dimming bulb.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. The rating is IP20, for indoor use, with no protection against water. A bathroom or a shower room is outside that rating, and the plated surface on the glass is another reason to keep the fixture away from steam. A bedroom, a living room or a dining room suits it.

Will the five globes be identical?

Not exactly. The glass is blown rather than molded, so small differences in wall thickness and in the line where the plating stops are normal between globes and between fixtures. The maker lists glass blowing as part of the process, and treats that variation as a property of the material.

Plated on the upper half and clear below, so the same globe both reflects and transmits

A clear glass globe shows the bulb and does nothing else. A fully plated one hides the bulb and becomes an object rather than a light. Splitting the globe between the two is what gives this fixture its character. The plated upper half mirrors the ceiling and the brass arms, so from across the room the cluster reads as five small gold spheres. The clear lower half lets the light out downward and shows the filament to anyone sitting under it. The dividing line is set high enough that the bulb stays out of direct sight when you are standing, which matters on a fixture with no diffuser anywhere in it.
