Is the base really marble?

Which shade should I take, plain or pleated?

At full height it stands 76 inches, which is about six foot four, so it clears an eight foot ceiling comfortably and reads tall in a room with a seven foot one. The stem adjusts down at the joint, so a low ceiling or a sloped one is a matter of setting it lower rather than a reason to skip it.

Does the foot switch sit on the cord or on the pole?

On the cord. It is a flat inline disc you press with one foot, which is why it ends up near the base rather than under your hand. Anyone who wants a switch at hand height should plan on a smart outlet or a switched socket instead, because there is no switch on the pole.
