The Shade Faces Up, Which Is Why This Sconce Never Shines Into Your Eyes

Most sconces point the open end of the shade down or out, which means anyone at the far side of the room sees a lit bulb. This bell is mounted the other way: the opening faces the ceiling, so the light leaves upward, catches the wall above and comes back into the room as a soft wash. What you see from a chair or a bed is a white ceramic bell and a chrome arm, not a filament. The ribs on the outside catch the light that passes through the thin ceramic, so the shade itself glows faintly at the same time. It is the version to choose for a room where people sit facing the wall.

Which way does the light go?

Upward. The bell faces the ceiling, so the light washes the wall above and returns to the room indirectly. A little also glows through the thin ceramic, which is what makes the ribs show at night.

Which bulb does it take?

One candelabra base bulb. Tell us which country the sconce is going to and we will send it with the right socket, E12 for North America and E14 for Europe.

How big is the bell?

5.9 inches across and 9.8 inches tall, so it is a small fitting. A pair either side of a mirror or a bed suits it better than a single unit on a wide empty wall, where it will look lost.

Will the ceramic match on a pair?

Closely, not exactly. Each bell is shaped and glazed by hand, so the glaze tone and the depth of the ribs vary a little. Mounted a few feet apart on the same wall, that difference is not something a guest will notice.

Does it need an electrician?

Yes. It is hardwired to a wall junction box and runs from a wall switch. There is no cord, no plug and no switch on the fitting, so the wall supply has to be in place first.

Can it go in a bathroom?

Only on a dry wall, away from the shower. The rating is IP20, no protection against water. On a dry dressing wall away from the shower it is fine, and that is where the polished chrome makes the most sense anyway.

Chrome does something matte finishes cannot: it picks up the wall color, the daylight and whatever stands opposite it, so the arm half disappears into its surroundings. On a fitting this size, 5.9 inches across and 9.8 inches tall, that matters. A solid black or brass arm would read as a dark bracket holding a white shade. The chrome swoop reads as a line instead. It is also the finish that sits most easily beside a mirror, where the frame, the taps and the fittings in a dressing area are usually already polished metal.

Returns and Refunds

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. If you change your mind within 24 hours of placing your order, before it has been processed, we will refund you right away. After an order has shipped, please follow the standard return process described above.
