Twenty Centimeters of Reach Is the Number That Decides Whether a Frame Is Lit or Just Grazed

Two brass bars can look identical on a listing and behave differently on a wall, and the variable is almost always projection. A bar that stands 5 cm off the plaster runs its beam down the wall, and a frame of any depth intercepts it at the top, which puts a bright band on the moulding and leaves the upper third of the picture in its own shadow. This bracket holds the shade 20 cm out. The light therefore starts in front of the frame face and travels down the work, which is what makes an evenly lit picture rather than a lit frame. Above a mirror the same reach does a second job: it pushes the source far enough forward that the reflection of the bar itself moves out of the sight line of anyone standing at the basin.

How does this differ from the 40, 60 and 80 cm brass bar?

Only in the size ladder and the price. This one is 42, 62 and 82 cm, so it is 2 cm longer at every step, and it costs more at every step. Everything else is shared: the same 8 cm height, the same 20 cm projection, the same 8W, 12W and 18W, the same brass body and vintage brass finish. Choose on width and on price, and nothing else.

Which length suits my artwork?

About half to two thirds of the frame width. A 30 inch frame takes the 42 cm bar, a 36 to 40 inch frame the 62 cm bar, a 48 inch canvas or a long mirror the 82 cm bar. Power rises with length, 8W, 12W and 18W, so the wide version is not a dim stretch of the small one.

Is 7.9 inches enough for a deep frame?

For almost anything hung on a domestic wall, yes. It clears a frame three or four inches deep with room to spare. Only a very deep shadow box needs more, and for that the jointed arm in this range reaches 12.1 inches.

Is the brass solid?

The body is brass with a vintage brass finish, so the metal is brass and the tone is applied. That is why polish is the thing to avoid: it will take the aged finish off and leave bright brass underneath.

Can it go above a bathroom mirror?

On a dry wall, yes, and most of the photography shows exactly that. The rating is IP20, so there is no water protection.

Is it dimmable?

As sold it holds one level. One warm light on a common wall switch is the only option offered, and the LED is integrated, so dimming cannot be added later by changing a lamp.

The other brass bar here runs 40, 60 and 80 cm. This one runs 42, 62 and 82 cm. Height, projection, backplate, wattage, light color, material and finish are the same on both, and side by side on a wall you would not tell them apart. So the choice is narrow and practical. If your frame sits at the top of a size band and you want the extra two centimeters of span, take this one. If the widths are equivalent for your wall, the shorter ladder costs less at every step and is the better buy. We would rather say that plainly than invent a difference that is not there.

Returns and Refunds

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. If you change your mind within 24 hours of placing your order, before it has been processed, we will refund you right away. After an order has shipped, please follow the standard return process described above.
