Brass bar lit above a round mirror over a walnut vanity with towels and a plant

Above a Mirror, Reach Moves the Reflection Out of the Way as Well as Aiming the Light

Most advice about picture lights above mirrors stops at the beam. There is a second problem that only shows up after fitting: you can see the light. A bar mounted tight to the wall appears in the glass as a bright horizontal line, right at the top of the field of view of anyone standing at the basin, and it is the sort of thing you notice every morning. Twenty centimeters of projection moves the source forward and up out of that reflection path, so what you see in the mirror is your face lit from in front rather than a strip of glare above it. The same reach keeps the beam off the top edge of the frame, which is the reason it was designed, but the reflection is the thing people thank the geometry for later.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Which length suits my mirror?

Take about two thirds of the glass, and center the bar rather than working to two thirds when a face is being lit. A 24 inch round mirror takes the 40 cm bar, a 36 inch mirror the 60 cm bar, a 48 inch mirror or a long counter the 80 cm bar.

How does this differ from the 42, 62 and 82 cm brass bar?

By two centimeters at each step and by the price. This ladder is 40, 60 and 80 cm and it is the cheaper of the two at every length. Height, projection, backplate, wattage, light color, material and finish are identical. There is no performance difference to find, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

Why does projection matter above a mirror?

Two reasons. The beam starts in front of the glass rather than at its top edge, so the face of the mirror is washed evenly instead of carrying a bright band. And the source sits far enough forward that you are not looking at the reflection of the bar while you use the mirror, which is the complaint people have about fittings mounted tight to the wall.

Is it solid brass?

The body is brass under an applied vintage tone. Polish will cut through that tone and leave bright metal, which is why the care note says to leave it alone.

Can it go in a bathroom?

On a dry wall above the mirror, yes, and most of the photography is of bathrooms. IP20 means no water protection at all, so keep it clear of the shower and of spray.

Is it dimmable?

As sold it holds one level. A single warm light on a common wall switch is what is offered, and the LED is integrated, so no lamp change can introduce dimming later.

Vintage Brass Belongs With Walnut, Brick and Tile, Which Is Where It Was Photographed

A vintage brass tone is warmer and duller than polished brass and darker than natural unlacquered brass, and that narrow band is what makes it easy to place. It sits against walnut cabinetry, against white brick, against stone counters and against terracotta, and it holds its own on a dark wood wall without disappearing. It does not sit with polished chrome, and beside bright brass it reads as tired rather than aged. The finish also flatters the light it gives: warm LED reflecting off warm metal keeps skin tones and wood tones honest, which is what a bathroom mirror and a framed landscape both want. In a cool room of nickel, white gloss and steel, the nickel and black bars in this range are the easier answer.
