Ornate brass bar lit over a landscape painting above a dark wood chest

A Wide Bar and a Deep Bracket Are What a Heavy Gilt Frame Actually Needs

Two numbers decide whether a picture light works over a large painting, and both of them are generous here. The bar is 25.6 inches wide, so the wash reaches the edges of a canvas rather than pooling in the middle and leaving the corners dark. It stands 6.3 inches off the wall, so the beam clears a deep gilt molding instead of stopping on it. Under a shallow fitting the frame lights itself and shadows the art, which is the most common disappointment with picture lights.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What size artwork does 25.6 inches suit?

A painting or mirror between roughly 30 and 44 inches wide. This is the widest bar in the lot and it is drawn for a substantial piece: an oil in a gilt frame, a large convex mirror, a canvas over a chest. Above anything under about two and a half feet it takes over the wall.

How far does it stand off the wall?

6.3 inches, which is what lets it clear a heavy frame. A deep gilt molding under a shallow bar lights its own top edge and shadows the painting below. This projection puts the beam out past the frame and down onto the canvas, which is the whole purpose of a picture light.

Is the light warm enough for an oil painting?

Yes. It is fixed at 3000K, which is the warm end and the right end for varnished oils, gilt frames and aged paper. Cooler light at 4000K or above makes warm varnish look gray and flattens the gold in a frame, which is why this model does not offer it.

Does it need an electrician?

Yes, and a solid fixing. It is hardwired, with a supply and a box behind the plate. It is also heavier than a plain bar, so fix into timber or a proper anchor rather than into plasterboard alone, particularly at this width where the ends carry weight away from the center.

Can it go in a bathroom?

On a dry wall, yes, but it is not what the shape is for. The rating is IP20, which is no protection against water. In a bathroom keep it above the mirror and clear of spray. Its natural home is a hallway, a stairwell landing or a wall of framed pictures.

Is the scrollwork cast or applied?

Cast into the face of the bar rather than glued on, which is why it holds a crisp edge and takes the aged finish evenly along its length. Clean it with a dry brush or a soft cloth rather than a damp one, because water sits in cast detail and dries as a mark.

Ornament Is the Point Here, So Put It Where the Room Is Already Decorated

Most of this range is drawn to disappear: plain tubes, slim rods, quiet brackets. This one is the opposite. Cast scrollwork runs the length of the face, green stone finials close the ends, and the finish is aged rather than polished, so the fitting reads as a piece in its own right. That suits a room that already has gilt frames, timber, patterned rugs and old furniture in it. In a pale minimalist room it will look like it was inherited rather than chosen, which is a fine thing to want and a poor thing to discover on delivery.
