Brass bar lit above a framed mirror on a dark panel wall over a walnut vanity

A Two Inch Projection Makes This a Mirror Fitting, Which Is Worth Knowing Before You Buy

Bars that look alike on a listing page can belong to two different jobs, and projection is what separates them. This one stands 5 cm off the wall. Above a mirror that is exactly right: the glass is flat, it sits nearly flush with the wall, and a close beam washes down it without hot spots, which is why every photograph of this fitting shows a bathroom or a dressing table. In front of a framed picture the same 5 cm is a problem. A frame two inches deep will stand as far out as the light does, so the beam clips the moulding and leaves a shadow across the top of the work. If you are lighting art rather than glass, the twin arm bars project 6.3 inches and the jointed arms reach 12.1 inches, and one of those is the fitting you want.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What does unlacquered brass mean in practice?

That the metal is bare. It starts bright and warm, darkens unevenly over months where hands and steam reach it, and settles into a patina. If you want that, leave it alone. If you want it to stay bright, dry it after use and polish it occasionally, which means committing to the polish for as long as you own it.

Which length suits my mirror?

Take about two thirds of the glass. A 36 inch mirror takes the 23.6 inch bar, a 48 inch mirror the 31.5 inch, a 60 inch mirror or a double vanity the 39.4 inch. Centering the bar on the mirror rather than at two thirds is the right move above a basin, so both sides of a face are lit evenly.

Will it light a framed picture?

It is the wrong fitting for that. The bracket holds the bar only 5 cm off the wall, so the beam runs close to the surface and a frame of any depth will cast a shadow across the top of the picture. This is a mirror front fitting. For art, the arm and twin arm models in this range project 6 to 12 inches.

Why is the bracket off center?

It is a design decision rather than a structural one: an off center mount breaks the symmetry of a plain bar and gives the fitting a direction on the wall. It also means the bar is not visually split in half above a mirror, which is what a central bracket does.

Can it go in a bathroom?

On a dry wall above the mirror, yes, and every supplied photograph shows it there. IP20 means no water protection, so keep it clear of the shower and of spray. Unlacquered brass will also patina faster in a steamy room, which is worth knowing before you choose it for an interior bathroom with no window.

Is it dimmable?

As sold it holds one level. One warm light on a common wall switch is the only option offered, and the LED is integrated, so dimming cannot be added by changing a lamp.

Unlacquered Brass Changes Over Time, So This Is a Finish You Choose Twice

A lacquered brass fitting looks the same in year five as on day one, because a clear coat sits between the metal and the air. This one has no coat. The brass is bare, which is why it reads warmer and softer in the photographs than a plated finish does, and it is also why it will not stay that way. Steam, fingers and time will darken it in patches, fastest near a basin and slowest on the top face. Two honest ways to live with that: let it go and accept a patina that no two fittings will share, or dry it and polish it on a schedule and keep it bright. The choice matters more in a bathroom than in a bedroom, and it is the one thing about this fitting that cannot be undone later.
