On a nightstand the low step is the one you use most, so read the specifications for that level rather than the maximum. Bulbs and dimming with touch table lamps The switch and the bulb must agree. A lamp with an integrated LED handles its own stepping and needs nothing from you. A lamp with a standard socket usually needs a dimmable bulb, since a fixed-output LED in a three-level base can flicker, buzz or run at one brightness. Sizing follows the usual bedside rule: an overall height of 24 to 27 inches puts the shade near eye level for someone sitting up in bed, and a 16 to 18 inch shade suits a nightstand of 20 inches or more. Socket: E26 on most US lamps, with the maximum wattage printed on the base plate. Bulb type: a dimmable LED or an incandescent for any three-level base. Shade bottom: 20 to 24 inches above the mattress for someone reading upright. Shade width: no wider than the nightstand, with 2 inches clear on each side. The body material decides where the lamp can live. Metal carries the charge across the whole surface, which is convenient in the dark and also means a ring or a sleeve brushing past can step the level. Questions about tap-operated lamps What bulb works in a touch lamp? A dimmable bulb, unless the lamp has an integrated LED. Check the product page for the socket size and whether the base is described as three-level or single-level. A fixed-output LED in a stepping base is the usual reason a lamp buzzes or refuses to change brightness. Why would a touch lamp come on by itself? Almost always the bulb or nearby electrical interference. Swapping a non-dimmable bulb for a dimmable one solves most cases. If it continues, move the lamp away from a router, a power strip or a large appliance, and try a different outlet before assuming the base is at fault. Do these lamps need a wall switch? No, and a switched outlet often complicates them. Cutting power at the wall resets some models to full brightness rather than to the level you left. Plug into a live receptacle and use the base. What are the common problems with touch table lamps? Three. The lamp switches on by itself, which is almost always a grounding issue: a touch circuit reads the change in capacitance from a hand, and a nearby appliance switching on or a static charge can mimic it. It will not respond to a gloved hand or through a cloth, which is normal rather than broken. And a non dimmable bulb in a touch dimming base buzzes, flickers or runs hot. Checking the bulb type against the base is the single most useful thing before assuming a fault. How much does a touch table lamp cost on this page? Can a touch lamp be plugged into a dimmer or a smart plug? Not usefully, and in some cases not at all. A touch base contains its own control circuit, so putting a second dimmer upstream of it either does nothing or confuses the sensor. A smart plug that only switches on and off works, but the lamp then comes back at whatever level it was left on, which is not always what you want. The reliable route for app or voice control is a lamp with that feature built in rather than a touch lamp with a plug added.
