# Title: Solar Post Cap Lights ## Description: Solar post cap lights replace the cap on a fence post, a deck rail or a gate pillar. The panel is built into the lid, so the fixture needs nothing run to the post and can go on a pillar that was never wired for light. Measuring for solar post cap lights The post dimension decides everything. A cap is made for a nominal post size, and the usual residential sizes are 4 by 4 inches, 5 by 5 and 6 by 6 for timber, with masonry pillars running wider. Most fixtures ship with an adapter base that covers two or three sizes, and the product page states which. Measure the post itself, not the existing cap, and measure at the top where the fixture will sit. An old timber post is often a fraction under its nominal size once it has weathered. A base that is slightly oversized can be packed out and still look right. One that is too small cannot be used at all. On a masonry pillar the top is rarely square to the millimeter. A fixture with a flat plate and a bead of exterior sealant handles that better than one that relies on a tight friction fit. Where the pillar top slopes for drainage, the plate wants packing on the low side so the panel ends up level. What solar post cap lights give you at night Output here is deliberately low. A cap light marks the line of a fence or the entrance to a drive and puts a small pool of light on the post below it. It does not light the yard, and a run of them along a deck rail is read as a boundary rather than as illumination. That is why spacing matters more than brightness. Every post on a short rail looks busy. Every second or third post reads as a rhythm and uses fewer fixtures. At a driveway, one on each pillar is the whole job. The panel sits flat in the lid, facing straight up, which is the position that collects most through the day. Keep it clear of overhanging branches and clean the glass once or twice a season. Which cap for which post Mounting Best in What it does Price here Deck rail posts A deck rail, a raised terrace edge A marker along a rail people walk beside $149 to $609 Fence posts A fence line, a garden boundary A repeated point that draws the line at night $169 to $359 Gate piers A gate pier, an entrance pillar A finished cap that marks where the gate is $219 to $649 Brick and stone pillars A masonry pillar, a driveway entrance A cap sized to a wide pier rather than a post $229 to $489 Lamp post tops A front path, a driveway Height at the roadside with a classic outline $289 to $699 Free standing A step, a border, a low wall A lit object placed where there is no post $199 to $519 What to measure on the post Post face dimensions The cap has to match the flat top it sits on. Measure that face before ordering: a cap wider than the post overhangs and drips onto the timber, and one narrower than the post leaves an exposed edge. Solar charge cycle The panel on the cap collects through the day and the light runs from the cell at night. A cap on a shaded fence will charge poorly however the specification reads, so judge the spot first. Wired alternative Several caps here are offered as wired or solar. A wired version gives constant output and needs a cable inside or alongside the post, which is far easier to plan before the fence or gate is built. IP65 A body sealed against dust and against water jets. Every cap on this page carries it, which is the baseline for a fixture sitting on an exposed post through a full season of weather. Integrated LED, not replaceable The diodes sit inside a sealed body with nothing to relamp. Almost every cap here is built that way, because sealing is easier without a removable lamp. The color temperature on the page is fixed. Questions about post cap lighting Will one fit a masonry pillar? Often yes. Check the stated base dimensions against the pillar top on the product page. Masonry pillars vary more than timber posts, so the measurement matters more here than anywhere else in the category. How long does a charge last? It depends on the cell, the draw and the day the panel collected. The stated run time appears on each product listing. Winter figures are lower because the days are short and the sun sits low in the sky. Can I replace the battery later? On some models the cell is accessible and on others it is sealed into the body. The product page says which. If long term servicing matters to you, look for a model with a stated replaceable cell.
