How to choose a picture light Start with the power supply, because it decides where the fixture can go. A hardwired picture light runs to a junction box behind the wall and shows no cord, which is the cleanest result and the one that needs an electrician. A plug in model hangs from the same bracket and runs a cord down to an outlet, so it can move when the art moves. A rechargeable model has no cord and no box at all, which is what makes it usable on a plaster wall, in a rental, or above a frame you rehang twice a year. Then set the width against the frame. A picture light that spans about half to two thirds of the artwork lights the middle evenly and lets the edges fall off gently, which is what the eye expects. Going wider throws light past the frame onto bare wall. Going much narrower leaves the outer thirds dim and puts a bright band across the center. The finish is the last decision, and the simplest rule is to repeat metal you already have in the room: brass with oak, leather and warm paint, black with iron hardware and dark frames, walnut tone with wood panelling. Almost every fixture on this page works this way, which is what allows a bar this slim. The color temperature printed on the page is fixed for the life of the fixture. Hardwired, wall mounted The fixture joins the house wiring at a box behind it and screws over it, with no cord showing. Most models here install this way. Above a frame the height is set by the picture, so settle that before the box is placed. Rechargeable battery A cell inside the body, charged over a cable, with no wiring at all. Part of this range works this way, and most of those models lift off their bracket to charge. It is the usual answer for a wall that cannot be opened up. Projection How far the fixture stands out from the wall. On a bar meant for art it decides whether the beam lands on the picture or on the wall below it, and a deep frame needs a longer reach than a flat print does. IP20 The dry indoor rating carried by almost everything on this page. It confirms the body is closed against fingers and offers nothing against water, which suits a hallway or a living room but not a shower zone. Sizing and mounting a picture light Two measurements do most of the work: how wide the fixture is against the frame, and how far it stands off the wall. The arm has to carry the head far enough forward to clear the frame and the glass, otherwise the beam grazes the top edge and leaves a hard shadow across the upper third of the picture. Small print or photograph, 16 to 24 inches wide: a fixture around 8 to 12 inches. Standard canvas, 30 to 40 inches wide: a fixture around 16 to 24 inches. Wide canvas or a mirror, 48 inches and over: a fixture of 30 inches or more. Mounting height: fix the bracket 4 to 8 inches above the top of the frame. Projection: the head should sit forward of the frame face, not level with it. Above a bathroom mirror the same fixtures are sold as vanity lights, and there the rule changes: center the fixture on the mirror rather than at two thirds, so both sides of a face are lit evenly. Every fixture on this page is rated IP20, which means dry indoor use only. That covers a bathroom wall clear of the shower, and it does not cover a covered porch. Will a picture light damage the artwork? An LED head runs cool and emits no measurable ultraviolet, which is the part that fades pigment, so it is a gentler choice than the halogen fixtures these replaced. That is not the same as no risk. Keep the stated distance between the head and the surface, and treat continuous light on watercolors, works on paper and textiles as something to limit rather than ignore. For an original of real value, ask a conservator before you light it at all. What light color suits a picture light? Warm white around 2700K to 3000K for oils, warm pigments and wood frames, because it holds the reds and ochres the painting was made with. Neutral white around 3500K to 4000K reads truer on black and white photography, pencil and cool toned abstracts. Where a product page states the LED is built in, that color is fixed at order and cannot be changed later by swapping a bulb, so decide it against the art rather than the room.
