Over a table, the fixture width should land between half and two thirds of the table width. In an open room with no table under it, add the room dimensions in feet and read the total as inches: a 12 by 14 foot room takes a fixture around 26 inches across.Height is the second half. Over a dining table, leave 30 to 36 inches between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture with a standard eight foot ceiling, and add roughly three inches of drop for every extra foot of ceiling. In an open room or a hallway, the bottom of the fixture stays at least seven feet off the floor so nobody walks into it.The stairwell is the one case where the usual numbers stop applying. A cascading fixture there is read from two floors at once, so it is sized to the height of the void rather than to the floor plan, and it hangs so the lowest point clears the highest tread by seven feet.Materials and light quality across chandeliersThe material decides what the fixture does to the light before it decides how the room looks. The list below is the short version of that difference. Cut crystal and faceted glass: throws points of light across the ceiling and walls. Needs a clear bulb to work. Alabaster and opal glass: glows rather than sparkles. Softer, better in a room used in the evening. Solid brass and iron: the frame itself is the ornament. Light comes from the bulbs, so shade choice carries the mood. Rattan, bamboo and wood: filters the light and casts a pattern. Output drops, so plan a second layer. Fabric and linen shades: the quietest option, an even wash with no shadow play at all. Bulb count matters as much as material. A six light frame with clear bulbs is a different room from the same frame with frosted ones, and the difference costs nothing to change later. The frame is bolted to the box in the ceiling, with no cord showing. A heavy frame may need the box fixed to the joists rather than to the plaster alone. Flush and semi flush A good share of this range sits tight to the ceiling or drops only a few inches. Those are the versions for an eight foot room, where a hanging frame would be in the way of anyone standing. E14 and G9 The two small bases most of these frames take, alongside the household screw base. A wide chandelier can hold many of them, so count the sockets on the product page before buying lamps. Drop The distance from the ceiling to the lowest point of the frame. Over a table, leave about thirty to thirty six inches of clear air. In a stairwell, measure from the highest tread, not the landing. Dimmable on request A large part of this range lists dimming as a build option rather than fitted. Raise it before ordering when a dimmer is already wired, so the driver inside matches that switch. What chandeliers are in style now Three frame shapes carry most of this range: the slim metal ring, the sputnik with exposed arms, and the cluster of glass globes on staggered drops. Crystal has not left, but the frames holding it are thinner than they were, and the stones are often set in a single tier rather than stacked. Rattan, wood bead and alabaster hold a steady place in dining rooms and bedrooms, where a softer material suits a lower ceiling. Finish follows the same split. Matte black and brushed brass dominate the metal frames here, while polished chrome appears mostly on crystal pieces. Range reviewed October 2026. Common questions before choosing a multi light fixture What is a chandelier? A chandelier is a ceiling fixture that carries several light sources on one frame, usually on arms or tiers, and hangs from a chain, a rod or a cord. A pendant carries one shade on a single drop. The number of light sources on a shared frame is what separates the two, not the price, the size or the material. How much does a chandelier cost on this page? Chandeliers here run from $109 to just over $21,000, and most sit between $200 and $1,900. Hand cut crystal and alabaster occupy the upper end, while metal rings, iron frames and wood bead baskets make up the lower half of the range.What is the difference between a chandelier and a pendant?A chandelier carries several lights on arms or on a frame. A pendant carries one shade on a cord or a rod. That is the whole distinction, and it is why a row of three pendants and one chandelier can both work over the same table.How high should one hang over a dining table?Between 30 and 36 inches from the tabletop to the bottom of the fixture on an eight foot ceiling. Add about three inches for each extra foot of ceiling height. Lower for a wide frame, higher for a narrow one, and check the sightline from a seated position.Do I need an electrician to install one?For anything heavy, yes. A standard ceiling box carries a limited load and a large frame usually exceeds it, which means a brace bar or a fix into a joist. Check the weight listed on the product page and settle the mounting before the fixture is in the room.Can these fixtures be dimmed?Only the ones whose specifications state it. A frame taking standard bulbs is usually dimmable with a compatible bulb and wall dimmer. An integrated LED carries its own driver, and not every driver works with every dimmer, so read the product page against the control already on the wall.How often do they need cleaning?Faceted crystal and cut glass show dust first and want a soft brush every few months. Metal frames need a dry cloth. Woven fiber releases dust with a vacuum brush.
